He wanted Joseph to be having an oddly easy time sparring with Gracey just to realize that due to the smoke coming out of his mouth she had been distracted the entire time XD  

As mentioned before, Gracey has to meditate before missions and matches because of how easily she can get distracted by her kitty instincts otherwise.
